The Power of Sound - Binaural Beats

If you're anything like me, you have come to realize the power of music, sound, and the power of its frequency. I think back to how much my life has been driven by it alone. My first memory is jumping on the bed while my dad played Elton John's "Bennie & the Jets" on guitar. Since then, it has continued to captivate me. I've traveled across states to see my favorite bands, throw on my headphones every time I catch a bus, and cruising the road belting nostalgic 90s songs is still one of my favorite pastimes.

Through my admiration of music, I discovered the amazing properties of binaural frequencies. These frequencies resonate at specific wavelengths and provide a variety of benefits, such as:

  • improving and stabilizing mood

  • catering a relaxed state

  • increased focus and cognition

  • better sleeping habits

  • improving the ability to learn and retain information

What is a Binaural Frequency?

It occurs when your brain simultaneously listens to two tones of slightly different frequencies, and your brain recognizes this as its own "beat." While that happens, your brain activity matches that frequency and causes you to quickly enter the desired state of mind caused by that specific frequency. This allows you to take advantage of the benefits each specific frequency provides.

By setting an intention on which mind state you want to achieve, introducing these binaural frequencies will help you create the neural pathways necessary to transition to that desired mindset. There are five brain waves you can achieve, and they are best described below.

Delta (1-4Hz): the deepest of frequencies. Best for deep sleep, meditation, and access to the unconscious mind.

Theta (4-8Hz): Best for meditation and creativity.

Alpha (8-14Hz): in the Alpha state, your mind is focused and productive. Best for focus, positive thinking, and increased learning capabilities.

Beta (14-30Hz): Best for analytical thinking or problem solving and stimulating high energy and action.

Gamma (30-100Hz): the highest of the frequencies. Best for memory recall and different or creative thinking patterns.

The ideal time to listen to these frequencies would be as you fall asleep, study, or sit down for meditation. Binaural Beats are best listened to with headphones, although not necessary! I invite you to take my recommendations and see what the world of binaural frequencies can provide for you! Click here for more of my favorites.
